Frequently asked questions

Is animated WebP supported in browsers?

Yes. Current versions of Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge can display animated WebP. Very old browsers may not.

Is WebP smaller than GIF?

Usually. WebP compresses each frame more efficiently and supports more colors, so the same animation is often noticeably smaller.

Does it keep transparency?

Yes. Transparent pixels are preserved in the encoded animation when the source frames contain alpha.

Can I use the result in a website?

Yes. Use a normal image element with the .webp file. Provide a fallback image only if you need to support very old browsers.
